Chayote-
An edible member of the gourd family, they have a flavor similar to a squash. In Cajun cooking,called mirlitons.
Jicama-
A root vegetable which has the flavor of a blend of apple and potato. Jicama can be used raw, such as in salads, fried, or roasted.
Prickly Pear-
An edible fruit of the prickly pear cactus. This fruit has a taste similar to rasberry and watermelon yet is slightly bitter. It has many tiny seeds throughout its flesh which are best removed. The prickly pear is very versatile and can be a dessert, such as an ice cream, or as a sauce with an entree.
Tomatillos-
Little, green, husked member of the tomato family. They are very tart and make a great base for earthy salsas and hot sauces. At the same time, they have a hidden sweetness which can be easily brought forth by roasting or grilling.
Masa Harina-
Translation:Corn flour. You are most likely to find this product labelled in Spanish. Corn flour is used primarily in making tamales.
